The new PADI
Instructor Development Course

It takes effort and commitment to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, but each step rewards you – and you’re diving. Meeting people. Going places. Doing things.
Do you want to abandon the nine to five grind you call a job?
Do you daydream about a life filled with adventure?
If you answered yes to any of these questions then you’re in luck. The new PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) curriculum has been released.

First new PADI IDC on Phuket!

Bjorn Täckmann was the first and only Course Director to implement PADI’s new IDC Program already for the March 21 IDC in 2001 !

Our next IDC starts February 22, 2006:

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to to benefit from a new and essentially changed IDC Program.
The PADI IDC – Instructor Course - has undergone a progressive update and is better than ever.

This new IDC curriculum was revised using information from a survey sent out to select PADI Professional Members. It places an emphasis on business and incorporates modern educational principles that emphasize a manageable, positive learning structure. You learn more, but also learn more efficiently.

As with most PADI programs, the IDC incorporates the home study philosophy. Independent study enhances schedule flexibility and allows candidates to arrive better prepared for the IDC.

The end result will make you a more knowledgeable and marketable instructor, making your dreams a little closer to reality.

There is now more emphasis on independent learning and, in the classroom, on practical application, marketing, sales, customer service, business practices & procedures, promotional techniques and concepts.

The program’s structure and educational materials also encourage greater interaction — less talk, more action.

Overall content hasn’t changed much – it’s been updated and streamlined. However a few changes and presentations have been added:

  • Diver retention programs, and business principles for the dive instructor. Candidates come away better prepared to offer complete programs that attract dive customers.

  • Teaching children with more focus on youth diving and how to plan promotions to youth and family.

  • Prescriptive teaching and how to make more effective use of available media and training materials.

  • How to organize and conduct the Peak Performance Buoyancy- and Project Aware Specialties.

  • The candidates must now complete all course knowledge reviews prior to the start of the IDC.

  • Candidate knowledge development presentations (academic presentations) now include practical local dive information, dive equipment and real world examples.

IDC duration:
The new IDC can be completed in only seven days after the candidates have completed the independent study.

The IDC structure is now divided into two parts – the first three days comprise of the Assistant Instructor Course and the last four days the OWSI program.

To maintain our success rate in the IE we will offer a full nine-day IDC program including a two days prestudy, a three days AI Course and a four days OWSI Course.

New Course Materials:
The IDC Candidate Workbook has changed and the Confined water and Open water lesson plan slates have been updated. Along with the revised Course Director Manual and updated evaluation slates, new digital presentations are available including photos, diagrams and video clips from various PADI videos.
